Six Week Old Ella : Newborn

Lovely Ella came into my studio at the age of six weeks old. Any regular reader of my blog knows that I have a very strong preference for photographing newborns as early as possible - ideally between 4-10 days. The older babies can be much more difficult to get to sleep and pose, and Ella's father had warned me that Ella tended to be a bit fussy. You can imagine my surprise when Ella was a complete angel (although awake) for most of the session.

Omni : 1 Year Old

What can I say about Omni? I adore this child! He is another one that I have been lucky enough to photograph since birth, and one thing has stayed constant through out his first year. Omni is a child of many faces.

I absolutely adore all of the different expressions he gives me during our time together.

Sophie : 2 Years Old

Sweet, sweet Sophie.

Sophie is probably one of the best behaved two year olds I have photographed to date. Not only did she tolerate three outfit changes and three location changes, she did it with grace. And that infectious smile.

My favorite part about Sophie's session was her adorable pink cowboy boots. I think her favorite part was waving to the cars passing by.

Graham : 1 Year Old!

You might recognize Graham from his 9 month session I photographed not too long ago.

Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting up with Graham and his family for his 1 year photo shoot. Unfortunately, Graham was getting his first tooth in and was less than thrilled to have some crazy lady with a camera in his face. We took our time, played lots of chase, and managed to get some great photos of Mr. Adorable.

And I think this is Graham's way of telling me the photo shoot is over. :)

I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Graham and his family (I have been photographing him since birth). It is such a blessing to be welcomed into the lives of others and to be asked to document such a special time. xoxo

I hate him.

No, you don't.

No. Really Dad. I HATE him.

I don't remember a lot from my childhood, but I do remember how much my brother and I fought. And I remember this specific conversation with my Dad.

I guess it all makes sense. My brother and I are as different as night and day. These differences are apparent from the moment you meet us - my brother strongly resembles our mother's side of the family; I look just like my dad - but they run much deeper than our physical appearances.

I'm the serious one; he's the fun one. I'm practical; he's a dreamer. I love rules and structure; he loves to bend, and sometimes break the rules. I am always planning and thinking of what's next; he lives for the moment.

I don't know exactly when it happened, but I think it started in high school. Instead of seeing our differences as a dividing wall between us, we started to see how our differences complimented each other and added value to our relationship.

He has a great sense of humor; I love to laugh. He loves to play music; I love listening to music. He's a good listener; I like to talk. He reminds me not to take life too seriously; I would like to think I keep him grounded.

My brother is one of the most amazing people I know, and I'm not just saying that because he's my brother. He's generous, kind and loyal. Absolutely hilarious. An amazing father, and a loving husband. He's a supportive and loving brother. Anyone that has met him knows exactly what I'm talking about. And they know how blessed they are to call him a friend.

Happy birthday, Tony. I am so proud of the man that you are, and feel incredibly blessed to call you both my brother and my friend. I love you.

Aslyn Ryan : Personal

I was the first. Well, besides the doctors, nurses, her mom and her dad... I was the first to hold her. Even before the grandparents. Sometimes, it really pays to be a photographer...

With the birth of my brother's first child, we knew they were having a boy, and I was invited in to photograph the birth. It was an amazing experience. Upon finding out they were expecting number two, they decided to switch things up. Not only did they decide to have a private delivery, they also decided not to find out the gender. Even though I begged. And pleaded.

The baby's due date came and went, and I {im}patiently waited. And waited. Nine days after her due date, my sister in law went into labor. I packed up my gear and headed to the hospital, eager to meet my new niece or nephew. At 6:39 pm, Aslyn Ryan was born. Shortly after, I was welcomed into the delivery room, where the secret of her gender was revealed to me.

I was honored to document her big brother meeting her for the very first time.

After we had taken some photos (and I had a chance to hold her) the grandparents came in. This is my mom holding her granddaughter for the very first time.

Graham : 9 Months

Last weekend, I met with Graham & his family to do his 9 month portraits. The weather was cool & cloudy, so we started off in the studio.

I prefer to photograph children (non-newborns) outside in a more natural environment. Mother Nature doesn't always allow for this, but the rain held out for us, so we made a quick trip downtown for a few more shots.

A New Appreciation : Las Vegas Photo Shoot

As you might already know, I was recently in Las Vegas attending the 2011 WPPI convention. I had a long list of classes I wanted to attend and things I wanted to do while I was there, and at the top of my list was to meet Shannon Hollman of Thousand Words Photography. Shannon and I have been friends for almost 4 years, however we had never actually met. In the midst of planning the trip, I came up with the idea that Shannon should take photos of my husband and I in the desert. She had done a session for another couple last year while she was there, and I figured with this being the year of our 10th anniversary, it made perfect sense. Shannon quickly agreed to my proposal and we set a date & time.

I have to admit, being on the other side of the camera was quite an experience. I stressed about what my husband and I would wear and how we'd do as subjects. In the week before we left, I went to the mall four separate times. I purchased and returned outfits. Should I wear my hair straight or curl it? I over thought the entire process. During the session, I was clueless. How should I stand? Where should I look? Do I smile or not? Was I squinting? I would be lying if I said it wasn't a huge relief once the session was over. And it made me appreciate my clients and what they go through that much more.

Through it all, Shannon and her husband Jeremy were amazing to work with. The session was fun, playful and relaxed - everything it should be. And the results? Amazing! I couldn't be happier with the results and have posted a few of my favorites below. You can see even more images on Shannon's fabulous blog. Plan on spending some time on her site - you will not be disappointed.

6 day old Ayla : Newborn

Sweet Ayla came into my studio at the young age of 6 days old. I've known her family for several years now, and had the opportunity to photograph big brother Logan almost three years ago. Ayla was so excited to have her photographs taken, she refused to sleep for three hours. :) We did a little schedule readjustment and managed to get her to sleep for some photos.

Las Vegas : 2011 WPPI

I love taking trips. I love the planning, anticipation and excitement that surround a trip, and this trip was one of my most exciting yet. I just got back from Las Vegas, where I attended the 2011 WPPI convention and trade show. This was my first year attending WPPI and in spite of waking up at 6 am three out of the four mornings to attend classes, I had an amazing time.

We flew to Vegas with two very good friends of ours, Geoff & Amy Hilgemann.

We stayed at the MGM, where the convention was held. This was the view to our left.

Geoff was a fantastic travel companion & researched the best places to go in our spare time.

While waiting for my next class to start, I walked through the trade show, where I ran into Jasmine Star. She was kind enough to let me follow her to the Leather Craftsmen booth she was getting ready to speak, and JD took this photo of the two of us.

She did a raffle drawing at the Leather Craftsmen booth and gave away 4 beautiful albums, and I was the lucky recipient of one of them!

Of all the classes I woke up early for, I had the easiest time dragging myself out of bed to see Jose Villa. He is without a doubt my favorite photographer and his platform class did not disappoint.

Jenny & Keith : Engaged

They first met at the hospital. She was doing a rotation and he was finishing up his residency. The attraction was mutual and before long, the after-work group dates turned into after-work romantic dates.

Yesterday, Jenny & Keith met me at Sellwood Riverside Park for their engagement session and we couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day. From the beginning, one can see that they have a love that is built on friendship, adoration and respect. They are two of the kindest people and I am honored to be photographing their wedding in July.

Married : Chris & Joanne

I was photographing what was supposed to be my last wedding of the year when I received a message from Chris. I'm getting married in three weeks. I know it's short notice, but I was wondering if you were available? The next day, Chris and I spoke over the phone and made arrangements for me to photograph their upcoming wedding.

It's not often that I don't meet the bride and groom until the wedding day, but because of our short timeline, such was the case. However Joanne was warm and welcoming the minute I entered her hotel room to take some getting ready photos. By the end of the evening I felt like Chris and Joanne had been friends of mine for years. I truly have the most amazing clients and am so blessed to be allowed into their lives to capture their milestones.

Chris & Joanne's wedding took place at the beautiful St. Stephen's in Portland and the reception took place at Gracie's.

7 day old Knox : Portland Oregon Newborn Photography

I love it when my clients know what they want, and Knox's mom did not disappoint. We planned most of what we were going to do for her newborn session during our maternity shoot, then I (we) eagerly waited for little Knox's arrival.

Knox was a photographer's dream in every way. He pretty much slept through the entire session, didn't fight my poses too much, and was cute as can be!

I love how mom and dad brought some items from home to really personalize their session. The white chair and blanket are from Knox's nursery. :)

So I never forget

It wasn't even a month ago that I sat here on my couch, laptop perched on my legs, and swore I'd never see it. Of course, deep down, I knew the light was there somewhere, but I was too buried in work to see it. My heart broke as time after time I sent my kids upstairs to entertain each other instead of taking the time to play a game, build with legos, or paint a picture as they had asked. It broke even more when they just stopped asking. I know that they are not going to stop growing while I sit at my computer all day editing this session or that wedding. I know that too soon, the day will come when they no longer want to play, snuggle and read with me. I know that next fall, my youngest will start kindergarten and my home will be empty and lonely, even if for just 2 1/2 hours a day.

I worry that I will look back and have regrets. Regrets about not enough zoo trips. Regrets of replying too often with "just a minute." Regrets about missed opportunities to turn a bad experience at school into a valuable life lesson.

I also want to make sure I'm absolutely clear on one thing.

Without a doubt, I love my job. LOVE.

I realize what a blessing it is to have people pay me to do something I love so much. I realize what a blessing it is that I am able to provide extra money for my family from the comfort of my home. I realize what a blessing it is to have my children home with me while I work instead of a stranger's home. Whole heartedly, I get it.

And today, sitting on my couch, laptop perched on my legs, I can see the light. I am trying so hard to be caught up by Thanksgiving, and it's going to be close. I may have few things carry over. You know what? I'm okay with that. What I'm not okay with is getting up from this couch to find my children have grown up and I've missed it.

So I'm taking today off. Instead of working, my daughter and I went to church, had a lunch date in my car, and talked. We snuggled on the couch, had hot chocolate and played a game on my iPhone. This afternoon, I'm going to spend some one on one time with my son. I think we'll go out for a Starbucks and I'll turn that bad thing that happened at school today into what will hopefully be a life lesson about how to deal with disappointment.

I took these pictures of Addison playing on my iPhone so I never forget. How little she was. How she curls her toes. How she smiles.

2010 Susan G Komen Race for the Cure

Yesterday, Team Nadine hit the pavement for the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure, along with nearly 40,000 other participants. This was the first year Team Nadine registered as an official team and we raised over $900 combined for the Susan G Komen Foundation.

We started the day with a quick stop at our local Starbucks, then headed to Washington Square to wait for our shuttle.

We found a nice gentleman to take a few pictures of our team.

Our team consisted of my best friend Misty, my mom Sandy..

We lost my mom's mother to breast cancer over 6 years ago. This was my mom's first year participating in the race and I'm excited to have her on my team.

This was Brady's second year racing with me. He did a wonderful job and managed to find a sucker to carry him so his legs could have a little rest..

I can't say how special it was to have my mom at my side this year. The girls came up the night before the race and we toasted to our team and my grandmother. Then, we stayed up way too late sharing memories of our beloved Nadine.

A letter to Nadine

I can't stop thinking about you. It must be the time of year, with the race just around the corner and all. Whatever the reason, you've been on my mind a lot. I miss you more than I can express and the way you lived your life is a constant reminder of the way I want to live mine. You are withouth a doubt someone who made this world a better place and I'd like to think at the end of my life, I might have done the same.

You were such a beautiful woman. Not only in your appearance, but deep down into your soul, you were beautiful. Kind, loving, giving, patient, generous, loyal.. The list goes on.. One of my favorite things about you was your sense of humor. I will never forget the year that you drew Curt's name in the gift exchange and gave him the gift of snowman poop. His reaction of not being certain if you were serious or not only made it better. I think about times like these and it makes my heart ache. Because I miss you, of course, but also because I'm left wishing I had taken more time to talk with you. And to listen.

I wish you had been able to see and hold my children. I try to remain thankful that I got to share the news of my first pregnancy with you - I realize it's more than my younger cousins will have - but I can't help but feel ripped off somehow, and a little jealous of my older cousins who got to have you in their children's lives.

I admire how content you were. You lived simply, and you were content. Your home was small, and the only one I have ever known you to live in. And you raised five children there. Most days, I struggle with the two I have. I cannot imagine raising five - especially in such close quarters. Yet you did it, and you did it well. I don't think I've ever heard you complain either. About anything.

I adore your faith and loyalty. Mom gave me your Bible and it's one of my most treasured posessions. It sits proudly on my mantle and once in awhile, the kids and I will sit down and look through it. I love the family tree section and wish it was filled out more completely. And I love that it has your handwriting in it.
I told them the story about the fifty dollar bill that you found in it. About how you were worried about your finances, so you opened up your Bible to pray, and there it was. That's one of my favorite stories.

I'm grateful to have you and Grandpa as an example of what a marriage should be like. I doubt it was perfect (although I can't ever remember seeing you fight). I'm certain there were difficult times. But through it all, love remained. You treated eachother with love and respect and you built a strong foundation on which to raise your family. You welcomed others into your home and helped those in need.

I hope you know how often I think about you. Your clock hangs in my dining room and every time it chimes, I smile. I can't see a rosebush without thinking of your beautiful rose garden (and you pruning in your bra). :) I sometimes call my daughter by her middle name, just so I can say yours, and I wish I had just given her your name as her first like I had wanted. I wish I could tell you how much you meant to me, although I'd like to think you knew.

Kylee : Senior

She's beautiful, funny and creative. Her smile is contagious.

This evening, I met up with Kylee and her mom Lori in the Pearl District. I love working with girls like Kylee - she was so easy to talk with and such a natural in front of the camera. But I'm sure it's hard not to be, when you're as gorgeous as she is.

I know I'm jumping ahead a bit in my editing, but I wanted to put a little peak up for Kylee and Lori. Thank you both so much for an enjoyable evening. I truly enjoyed our walk and conversation - enjoy your peek!

Lily : Newborn

It's no secret that I love photographing newborns.

I've been blessed to experience working with so many different subjects, which has allowed me the opportunity to discover what I truly love. While newborns are one of my favorite subjects, they are also my most challenging. The baby needs to be fed, warm and sleepy, which all seems simple enough. The challenge comes not in getting the baby asleep, but rather in keeping the baby asleep while moving from set to set; from pose to pose.

The challenge becomes even greater as the age of the newborn increases. I prefer to photograph newborns between the ages of 5-10 days old, when they are still sleepy and have that newborn curl. Of course, I don't always get to choose the age at which I photograph my subjects. Take sweet little Lily for example. Mom called me to schedule a session when Lily was already 5 weeks old. They live in Seattle and were going to be in town for two days the following week, and wanted to set something up.

I'll be honest, I felt a little panicked. A six week old? They're driving so far. What if the session is a complete disaster? I explained to mom that most of the newborns on my site are much younger, but that I would do my best to capture the images that she wanted, and prepped her on things she could do to help make the session successful.

By the time Lily's session rolled around, I had convinced myself that I wasn't going to be able to get her to sleep and had a mental list of "awake" poses to do with her.

Mom did everything I suggested. And Lily proved me wrong.

Kelsie - Class of 2011

Kelsie is a beautiful, beautiful girl.

Sure, she's easy on the eyes - that's apparent the moment you meet her. But what is also apparent almost immediately is how beautiful her soul is.

Kelsie is kind. Caring. Easy to talk to. Faithful. Intelligent. Always smiling. (Always!)

I absolutely loved every second that I got to spend with Kelsie earlier this week. I have no doubt that life has incredible things in store for her.

Neil & Michelle : Engaged

I'll be honest, I never thought I'd see the day...

Don't get me wrong, I adore Neil - he's like a brother to me. I've literally known him half my life. I just never really saw him as the settling down type. And, if I'm still being honest, maybe part of me never thought he'd meet that special someone that could settle down with him.

Neil is intelligent and practical. He's hardworking and stubborn. Always honest (even when you don't want him to be). He's very opinionated and a loyal friend.

Neil first introduced me to Michelle almost two years ago and we just clicked. Like, instantly. Since then, we've developed a very close friendship and I love her like a sister. She's made me laugh and has seen me cry.

Michelle is genuine. She's outgoing and kind. She knows who she is and isn't afraid to be herself. She is accepting and loving. Always honest and a perfect match for my friend.

I am so thankful that Neil & Michelle found each other - because they work so well together, of course - but also because I now have two friendships where I used to have one.

6 Month Old Maylin

She's full of smiles. And absolutely adorable.

Last weekend, I had the opportunity to spend some time Miss Maylin, who is now 6 months old.

And oh my goodness, she is a doll!

I could not believe all of the smiles she gave me, and I want to thank her parents for doing everything right to make our session a success. A well rested baby with a full tummy is a much happier baby and sets the stage for great photographs. Here are a few from our session.

I know my blog is neglected. It always happens this time of year. Life gets busy and the daily challenge is to just try to keep up; to not get completely buried. I have learned to accept that that's just the way my life is during the busy summer months.

Until I met with Kelley last week. I'm photographing Kelley & Adam's wedding tomorrow and had met with her to view the venue and go over last minute details. We were chatting away and then, ever so casually, she said it.

You really need to update your blog.

I laughed, agreed, and relayed my "I'm just so busy this time of year" speech to her. But as I drove home, her comment stuck with me. And I realized that she's absolutely right.

So, Kelly, this post is for you, to say thank you for reminding me of how important it is to stay connected with my clients and their families.

8 month old Julian

I absolutely love this family.

I was first contacted by Jennifer when she was expecting. I met up with Jennifer and her husband at a vineyard for her maternity session and instantly fell in love with them. Since then, I have photographed Julian as a newborn, and again at 4 months old. Last weekend I had the pleasure of photographing this adorable little guy once more, and I can't believe he's almost 9 months old. Although he was getting over a double ear infection and bronchitis he was a great sport and managed to give me a few smiles.

In her memory : Giving back

It's hard to believe that it's been over six years since she left us. Six years since I received the telephone call, telling me that the cancer had spread to her brain and they expected her to live less than two weeks.

My sophomore year in college, my grandmother Nadine was diagnosed with breast cancer. This was my first encounter with any sort of cancer, and to say I was terrified would be an understatement. My grandma had a mastectomy and was cancer free for about five years, when she started having pain in her pelvic area. That's when it was discovered that her breast cancer had spread to her bones and liver.

Shortly after her newest diagnosis, my husband's job moved us to Sacramento. I often felt guilty for not being there to help my mom take care of her, but a part of me believes it was a blessing that I was able to have some distance from her deteriorating condition.

After we got the call informing us that she had little time left, my husband and I drove home to be with the family and say our goodbyes. I remember sitting with her in her room, not knowing the right words to say, but being perfectly content just being in her presence. I helped her eat her breakfast of waffles and black coffee, trying to get just the right amount of syrup on each bite. When it was time to go, I hugged & kissed her, and told her how much I loved her, knowing it would be the last time.

For several years now, I've participated in the Susan B Komen Race for the Cure. I have raced in Sacramento in celebration of my grandmother's life and in Portland in her memory. This year, I’ve decided I need to do more to make a difference. I have created a team, appropriately named "Team Nadine" and will be raising money in her honor.

Elizabeth & Matthew : Married!

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of documenting Elizabeth & Matthew's wedding at the beautiful Beckenridge Vineyards in Dallas, Oregon. I had the opportunity to get to know them before their wedding when we met up for an engagement session last fall in the Pearl District. Their wedding day was absolute perfection - beautiful location, nice weather, and their closest friends and family witnessing them declare their love for one another.

I must admit, when I get an inquiry for a male high school senior, I'm a bit less excited than if it had been for a female. I don't have anything against the gentlemen, the girls are just easier. As in, they actually want to be there.

Jake, however, was a breath of fresh air. Oh, I'm not denying that he was there at the request of his mother, but he was funny, cooperative and a natural in front of the camera. See for yourself...

Mother & Son

I was thrilled when Nicole inquired about a mother/son session. About two weeks ago, after one reschedule due to rain, we were finally able to meet up at Champoeg Park. We met up a couple hours before sunset, tromped through the fields and had a wonderful time. Sweet Quinlan

So, I'm either hot or cold with my blogging. I know it's not a good excuse, but sometimes, life just gets in the way...

Last weekend, I had the opportunity to work with little Quinlan again. I believe this is the third time I've photographed her and this was by far the most fun. This is such a fun age and these tiny people are so full of personality! It only took her a few minutes to warm up to me and once she did, we had so much fun! Here are a few of my favorites from our session.

4 day old Ace : Newborn Photography

"Hi Angela, it's Alicia. I'm not sure if you remember me, but you photographed our son Cash about a year ago."

I absolutely remembered Alicia and her family. They brought Cash to me when he was just a few weeks old for his first photo session, and now they were calling to book a session for their newest arrival, Ace.

Congratulations! How old is he?

He's two days old today.

Yeah, she called me from the hospital. I love my clients.

Two days later, I had the honor of meeting Ace, at the sweet age of 4 days old. I'd like to say he slept the entire session, but I'd be telling a lie - a big fat lie. After about 3 hours and only 3 different poses, we decided it might be best to schedule a follow up session. Three days later, they returned. And this time, Ace was a rockstar....

I admit it. I'm a bit of a stalker. I wait for the email, and then I check the tracking numbers. Daily. And when the day finally arrives, I wait, I watch, and I listen. Because yes, I know what the UPS truck sounds like.

I received my confirmation email that my sample albums had been shipped and that they were to arrive on Tuesday. Wait. Tuesday? But Tuesdays are my taxi days - drop Addi off at preschool, get Brady ready for Kindergarten, take Brady to kindergarten, kill 45 minutes, pick up Addison from preschool, kill an hour, pick Brady up from Kindergarten.... How could I possibly sign for my package if I wasn't home? And what are the odds that I'd actually be home when Mr. UPS Man showed up with my package?

On Tuesday, I rushed to and from every destination, cursing in my head at the slow moving vehicles. Don't they know I'm expecting a very important package? And then it happened. While driving Brady to kindergarten, I spotted Mr. UPS Man a few blocks from my house. The race was on. I quickly dropped Brady off, kissed him goodbye and hurried home. No signs that the UPS man had stopped by. And then I heard that familiar sound of the UPS truck. I was waiting at the front door before he even stepped out of his truck. By the grin on my face, I'm sure he thought he had just delivered me a package containing one million dollars.

I've already shown the albums to several future brides and they have been a huge hit. They were designed to showcase the many ways they can be customized to fit each individual couple. The bride and groom have complete control over every aspect of their wedding album, inside and out. One sample has a more modern look, with the cover image printed on metal, the other a more traditional look with two toned leather. The albums also showcase other options, such as cut vs. creased seams, square vs. round corners and thin vs. thick pages. I am thrilled to have found a product that is just as unique as the people I am blessed to work with!

Janelle in the Pearl : Senior Photography

She's energetic, fun, and has a smile that could instantly light up a room. Janelle, along with her sister Jenny, met me in the Pearl District this weekend for what turned out to be one of the most fun senior sessions I've had yet. I think she smiled (and laughed) the entire session. Down to Earth, easy to talk to, and did I mention absolutely beautiful?

Janelle (and Jenny-From-the-Block), it was an absolute pleasure to meet you both. I can't wait to see what the future holds for you. I can only imagine how amazing it will be.

Erica & Andy ~ Married!

Genuine. When I think about Erica, it's the first word that comes to my mind. She is a breath of fresh air and she wears her heart on her sleeve. She lives her life with sincerity, integrity and passion. She first met Andy in college twelve years ago. She needed a place to live and he and his buddy needed a roommate. During their years at Oregon State, Andy and Erica fell in love. They graduated, secured jobs and made a home on a little piece of land on the outskirts of town. And they lived their lives. This past August, twelve years after meeting, they exchanged their vows in front of their closest friends and family. I was honored to be there not only as their photographer, but as their friend.

Erica and I also met in college and we quickly became friends. Unfortunately, after I graduated, Erica and I lost touch, although I thought of her often. I never thought I'd see her again until Justin and Lena walked into my studio to have their newborn son photographed. I immediately recognized Justin as Andy's buddy - the one he was living with when Erica moved in. But I was too scared that I was wrong about who he was, so I didn't say anything. Until two years later, when they returned with their newborn daughter. I couldn't help myself and I asked them if they knew her. As fate would have it, they are the best of friends and Erica is the Godmother to both of their children. They told me that she and Andy were planning their wedding and I asked them to please let her know that I would love to reconnect with her. I didn't hear anything for several months until I received a wedding inquiry from Erica. It has been such a blessing to have my friend back in my life. She is still sincere. Still passionate. And more genuine than ever.

Dance like no one is watching...

We were driving in the car when I said something to my husband about it. About her and how innocent she is. She was buckled in her carseat, bright eyed and smiling; singing one of her made-up-on-the-spot-songs that have become one of my favorite things. She was unaware of anything else, lost in her song. It was in that moment, that I could see her innocence.

It's not uncommon to hear comments about childhood innocence. Children and innocence go hand in hand, afterall. But there's something about Addison that is ultra-innocent. Her innocence is so pure and so obvious, you can feel it. She doesn't have a care in the world. She's not bothered by the peanut butter and jelly on her face or concerned that the tutu she's adorned doesn't go with her outfit. She sings Christmas songs in Target to whoever will listen and isn't the least bit concerned that it's January and the Christmas decorations are nowhere to be seen. She loves completely, sings loudly and dances like no one is watching...

I have been dying to photograph Laura & Jeff since the day I met them. They live down the street from me and are the sweetest people you could ever want to meet. Happy Birthday, Reed!

Okay, okay. I know. I'm a terrible blogger. I won't deny it. But I promise, my heart is in the right place. I have good intentions and think about blogging often. I've been blessed with a lot of business this year in the form of weddings, engagements, babies, expectant mothers, and seniors. In an effort to keep up, some things have had to go. Unfortunately, my blog is one of those things.

About a month ago, one of my closest friends and I got together to photograph her little boy Reed, who had just turned 1. He might look familiar - he's graced the blog before. We set out to a new location (chosen by her, which I love) and got to work. I've said it before, and I'll say it again - I love my job! I got to spend the morning with a dear friend and her adorable baby and we even found time to have coffee. Reed wasn't really in the mood for photos, but we managed to work it out and he gave me a smile or two, and several really cute looks.

Makindra & Stephen are fabulous. Not only is she one of the most beautiful brides I've ever had the pleasure to photograph, she is also equally as beautiful on the inside. Their love for eachother is obvious at first glance, as is their love for their friends and family. Kind, considerate, caring - these words don't come close to describing the beautiful couple.

Sleepy Colin : Newborns

Talk about a baby boom. Babies are coming out of the woodwork! And I am loving every minute of it. Colin visited me at 9 days old - in my opinion the perfect time for newborn portraits. And while I'm always excited for a newborn session, this session was a little extra special to me because Colin is the son of an old high school friend. I have known Geoff since I was 17 years old (and if you know how old I am and do the math, you'll see that's a very long time).

Baby Jake : Newborns

Jake is a special baby. Of course, all babies are special, but little Jake came into the world six and a half weeks early. He stayed in the hosptial for 2 weeks. And he's perfect. Especially that round face of his. I love it!

Jake came to my studio a bit older than most at nine weeks. But only 2 weeks past his due date. And he slept like a champ. How I love sleepy babies. Congratulations, Mark, DaiLene and big brother Max!

Happy Birthday, Addi-Bear!

Today, my beautiful little girl turns three years old. I remember the day I found out I was going to have a daughter. I told anyone that asked that I didn't really care if I had a boy or a girl. And I truly believed it. I loved the idea of a brother for my son, but I also loved the idea of having the opportunity to raise one of each. Imagine my surprise when, upon hearing I was going to have a little girl, I started crying. Happy tears, of course!

I absolutely adore my daughter. She is an amazing little creature and a perfect gift from God. She is affectionate, silly, and creative. I can't help but smile when she shares her treat with her brother because he's already finished his. She loves to snuggle, read books and sing songs. And not just any songs. She makes up her own. On the weekends, my husband and I will listen quietly from our room while she sings to herself in the mornings. She can sit and draw, cut, color and paste for hours. She's gentle, yet tough. Sweet and a little bit of rotten. She's my baby and I'm so proud to call her my daughter.

My mom came up a couple weeks ago to help with the kids while I photographed a session. My beautiful sister-in-law surprised me by coming as well and bringing my nephew, who is now almost 8 months old. I know. I can't believe it either.

After I had finished my session, we decided to get a few shots of the three of them together.

Rachael & Ryan - Engagements

Rachael & Ryan met in college. She was working at orientation and he was a transfer student. They met, spoke briefly and then parted ways. Was it love at first sight, I asked dreamily, to which they looked at eachother, smiled, and replied, no.

But fate was on their side and their paths crossed again. Rachael invited Ryan to hang out with her and some of her friends and that's when it started. She recalls that they sat and talked and had a real conversation. About real things. And that's how their story begins...

I'm laughing to myself as I think about the rest of their story. Rachael didn't think Ryan would be interested in her, so of course, I needed to know why. She's intelligent, fun and beautiful. How in the world could he not fall head-over-heels in love with her? Her reply was not what I expected. Well, Ry was marketable. Girls actually liked him. Seriously. That's what she said. It still makes me laugh.

I am very much looking forward to capturing Rachael & Ryan's wedding this September and I want to thank you both for spending the morning with me!

Addi's not-so-great 3 year old session

I can't believe my little girl is almost 3. I know it's cliche, but it really does seem like only yesterday I was cradling her in my arms, rocking her to sleep. Somehow, this tiny baby has turned into a lovely little girl. A little person. With her own thoughts, likes & dislikes, and opinions (and strong ones, trust me).

Today, Addison & I took a quick trip to Old Town Sherwood for a brief 3-year session. Although the sun was a bit too bright for her liking (and she made it very well known), we managed to get a few cute (and a couple funny) shots.

She might very well be one of the easiest babies I've photographed. And one of the most beautiful. Yesterday, I got to meet lovely Kianna, who was just 9 days old. At the beginning of our session, she had me worried. She was so alert, just looking around. I thought to myself "Oh great. This one is going to be a real challenge." Boy was I wrong. She posed for a few awake pictures, then ate and quickly went to sleep. While she didn't sleep too long, she was an absolute dream to work with.

All because of a little shopping

We met in the mall.

My husband was shopping for new work shirts and the kids and I went along for the fun of it. The kids & I were waiting for Brandon to finish up in the dressing room and that's when we met. I can't remember exactly how the conversation started, but it didn't take long for her to proudly tell me she was expecting twins. Well, her daughter was, anyway.

We parted ways, but I couldn't stop thinking about her. Twins. How fun would that be!? I decided then and there that I had to have them. In my studio, that is.

Fate was on my side that day and I ran into Grandma again. This time, I mustered up all of my courage, walked up to her, and told her who I was and what I did. I gave her a business card and asked her to give it to her daughter. If she liked my work, I'd love the opportunity to photograph her twins.

This weekend, I finally met Logan & Carter who are just a month old. They did wonderful and I loved every moment of our session. A very warm thank you to Grandma, Mom & Dad, and Logan & Carter for allowing me the opportunity to photograph these sweet babies.

The best of both worlds...

My children are so lucky. Not because they have great parents (which, of course they do), but because they get to experience the best of both worlds. We love living in Sherwood where friends and parks are a short walk away. However, on weekends such as this, they get to go back to Grandma & Grandpa's house. Well, a ranch actually. On the ranch, they get to shoot paintball guns, drive Grandpa's pickup, drive four wheelers & rangers, and get dirty. Real dirty.

I am lucky too. On Friday, while at ProPhoto Supply to pick up my new PocketWizards, my husband surprised me by telling me that I could make the purchase I've been waiting so patiently for - the new Canon 5D Mark II. After making my purchase, I had to go home, feed my son lunch and pack the car for our roadtrip to Grandma & Grandpa's house. Next, off to school to pick up Addi and again to pick up my husband from his office. And there my brand new camera sat.

Waiting.

Immediately upon arriving to my in-laws, I broke out the charger and waited the 2 1/2 hours it took for the battery to charge. I was dying to try it out. I quickly filled up my memory card and opened up the images in CS3. Or tried to... I quickly learned that my old software was not compatible with my new files. A not-so-quick upgrade and install and I believe I am finally up and running. I hope.

Finally, the first image from my new camera, paired with my Canon 70-200 2.8L IS lens (one of my favorites for sure). I just love how focused he looks sitting in the Ranger.

Although I promised myself I wouldn't work on my birthday, I made no such promise for the day before my birthday. So I was thrilled when I heard Reed needed his one year pictures taken. And even more thrilled when I heard is grandparents would be joining us for the session.

I remember the first time I met little Dario. How could I forget? It was a hot summer day. I was in love with his rolls. And he really made me work for it.

Since then, I've photographed him three more times - his baptism (what an honor), family portraits in the fall, and now his 1 year portraits. I have truly enjoyed getting to know him and his family and look forward to next time.

....and loved beyond belief. Albert's name was chosen in remembrance of his great grandfather and his birthday was a day filled with emotion. His big sister Kaylee had been born at 24 weeks and sadly was not strong enough to stay with us. His birth was celebrated by all who knew of his mom's heart breaking story and I was honored to do his photographs this afternoon.

I absolutely adore this family. I know I've already said it, but it's so wonderful to get to watch these little ones grow. Recently, I had the pleasaure of photographing sweet little {B} again, who is now 6 months old. I think I've made it pretty obvious that newborns are my favorite subjects to photograph, but if I had to choose my second favorite age, 6-7 months would be it. The babies are sitting, smiley and wonderful to interact with.

I love my job. I get to meet the most wonderful people and often times, I get to watch their babies grow, as I have with little {B}. The fist time I met this family was when little {B} was still in his mommy's tummy, then again days after he was born. Meet Amanda. I knew from my correspondence with her mom that this was going to be a fun session. Amanda is her first to go off to college and while I was asking questions in preparation for the session, mom said she just wanted it to be a great experience for her daughter. I loved that! Amanda was up for anything, and definitely a trooper - she climbed a rock wall to sit in the window of a fantastic old building in the Pearl District.

You might recognize Nataly & Jason. I've had the pleasure of photographing them on more then one occasion. The first time was when she was expecting sweet Joelle, now two years old, and again after Joelle's birth. I had a third opportunity to photograph little Joelle at the busy age of 18 months.

Nataly & Jason are now expecting child number two - another little girl. Our first session had to be rescheduled because my two year old decided to down with croup. Nataly was anxious to reschedule, and understandably so, considering her body is sending her signs that her baby girl is coming soon. Fortunately, we were able to do her session and had a great time. Nataly is such a beauty - I always look forward to the opportunity to photograph her and her beautiful family.

Today, I had the opportunity to get another session with 3 day old {L} from my previous post. Today, he is 11 days old and was MUCH more cooperative. Actually, he did incredible. A few of my favorites from today's session:

Baby {C} came back today for a mini session to try to get this one shot that I had been talking about with his parents, after realizing that dad is a fire fighter for the Portland Fire Department. I thought for sure I would love it more in color, but now I can't decide..

Today, I photographed 10 month old {S}. This is the third time I've had the pleasure of photographing her - she is so sweet and such a beauty. She is on the verge of walking & kept me on my toes today...

Three day old {L}

So, yesterday I ventured to my best friend's house to get some beautiful images for her of her 3 day old baby.. Little did I know it would end up being one of my worst shoots ever. Poor little {L} only wanted to be held by his mother & nurse.. Anytime we tried to do anything with him, he cried.. The best shot from our 4 hour session:

Logan was born today!

My best friend surprised me by calling me at 2:15 this morning to let me know that her water had broke & she was headed to the hospital. I left my house at 8:15 this morning thinking I had plenty of time.. I got there at 9:20 and sweet, perfect Logan was born at 9:38AM. Her labor progressed too quickly, so there was no time for an epidural, and she was a champ. She & her husband made a beautiful team and I couldn't be more proud of her.

Man, this little guy gave me a run for my money!! Upon his arrival, I was told by his parents that he had been awake for about 3 hours. What a relief! I should have no trouble getting him to sleep...or so I thought.. 3 hours of shooting and we could really only get him to doze off in mom or dad's arms, and I use the term "doze" lightly. This family was a joy to work with and I can't wait for them to see their images. Here are a couple of my favorites from the session:

Wow, it was been way too long since I've photographed a newborn. Way too long. I was thrilled when I received an email a couple days ago about photographing sweet little A. I know her parents, aunt and granparents are all anxious to see the images, so here are a few to hold you over until I get them processed. My poor husband had to go to work on Monday. Well, he had to go every day, but Monday was especially difficult because he had to dig his car out from the weekend snowfall. Here are some images from Monday... And a note to add that we are finally starting to show signs of melting!

Wow, this weather is something else. And what amazes me most is the difference from Portland to Salem. South of Salem had NO snow and we have at least 7 inches with a very cool inch thick layer of ice on top of that.

This one I love - it shows where the cars have driven in the streets and made a very cool mosaiac of snow & broken ice.

52 week project with my kids!

I've been asked to join a flickr group where the idea is to take a photograph a week for one year of yourself and your children. If you followed my blog earlier in the year, you know I attempted a self portrait a day and fell off the wagon at day eighty-something. As daunting as it was to take a picture a day, I do believe I can keep up with one a week, especially when I get to involve my children. I started the project the first week in December, so I will be doing my third photograph this week.
